PPSR Check

Before you purchase a pre-owned car, it is vital to do a few tests to check that it is a sound decision. One of these is the Personal Property Securities Register check. This is frequently abbreviated to PPSR check. To obtain a PPSR check, you must pay a fee to access an information sheet about the vehicle. The report you obtain will tell you important information such as if there is any finance or other debt against the car, if it has been previously written off, and if it has been reported as stolen. The purpose of the PPSR check is to allow you to verify that the car is genuinely owned by the seller (in other words, that you are not purchasing stolen property) and in full (so you are not taking on debt as a result of the purchase). In order to do a PPSR check, there is some information about the car that you will need. This is the VIN, or vehicle identification number. You will need to read this off the car directly, as a dodgy seller may supply you with a VIN which is different to that on the car.

The resultant report can be difficult to interpret, particularly if you do not have much experience with reading PPSR reports. If you get a pre purchase motor vehicle inspection performed by AutoChex, we will assist you in understanding the information presented to you. This enables you to make a fully informed decision before you proceed.

A PPSR check on a vehicle you wish to buy is not the only step you need to take to investigate the car before purchase. The PPSR check is the bare minimum. When transferring ownership of the car, you will also need to get a roadworthy inspection done in order for you to legally drive the vehicle. A common misconception is that the roadworthy inspection tells you of any major mechanical issues that the car may have. However, this is certainly not the case. While a roadworthy signifies that the car is in a good enough condition to be driven right now, it says nothing of certain issues which require repairs or will require repairs in the near future. For this reason, it is also recommended to have a mechanical inspection undertaken. At AutoChex, we perform on-site personal inspections for cars as well as other larger types of vehicles. This equips you with the knowledge and wisdom which you need in order to make a decision on whether or not to proceed with the purchase. Also, we include a PPSR report and interpretation as part of our inspection packages. Our mechanical inspection, conducted by an appropriately qualified and experienced person, is aimed at informing you if the car in question is running well and will be reliable. We offer different inspection packages to suit a range of budgets, making this an affordable decision as part of your due diligence in buying a second hand vehicle.
